About the Event
Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Blackbird is a five-time Native American Music Award-winning band that fuses Native American flute and contemporary rock into a genre they self-classify as “alter-Native” rock. Co-founded by Cody Blackbird, who has been referred to as one of the top Native American flutist touring today (Chicago magazine), Blackbird has shared the bill with such artists as the Black Eyed Peas, John Trudell, Buffy St. Marie, Jewel, Jason Mraz, and many others. The band’s first two studio albums were produced by Kenny Lee Lewis of the Steve Miller Band. Blackbird’s most recent single, “Back Up,” features the Grammy®-winning (and fellow Alaskans) Portugal. The Man and famed Native fiddle player Sage Cornelius. Through their lyricism, and musical platform, Blackbird strives to share the importance of finding purpose and keeping Indigenous culture alive through the arts.
