About the Event

To prepare for the darkness of winter, many cultures around the world make time to celebrate goodness through crafts and festivals of light. In the Pampanga region of the Philippines, people make star-shaped lanterns, famously known as “parol” from the Spanish word “farol,” which translates to “handmade lantern.” In this workshop, you will build a small paper parol, made with LEDs and reflective materials, a symbol of the light that is always within you, illuminating each place that you go. 

Biography 

urbanSTEW is a nonprofit arts collective located in Phoenix and dedicated to inspiring and expanding digital arts in the community. Its commitment to education, artistic practice, and creative tool development grows out of immediate public needs and interests. urbanSTEW is passionate about engaging and including its audiences through participation in community events and programming. As part of its mission, urbanSTEW supports open-source software through development of creative audio code libraries for popular game engines and art-making software. 

urbanSTEW was founded in 2009 and, over the past decades, has worked on art exhibits, performances, and workshops with numerous partners, such as the Heard Museum, Mesa Arts Center, Conder Dance, Scottsdale Arts, local artists, and public schools.
