Local Light 2018

Canal Convergence extends its atmosphere beyond the Scottsdale Waterfront!

Dates: Nightly through Dec. 31

Location: 5th Avenue, Stetson Drive and Marshall Way in Scottsdale’s Arts District

Canal Convergence is extending its atmosphere beyond the Scottsdale Waterfront to Old Town Scottsdale businesses south of the Arizona Canal through a new initiative called Local Light.

Beginning Oct. 25, this initiative from Scottsdale Public Art places additional light-based installations along 5th Avenue, Stetson Drive, and Marshall Way in Scottsdale’s Arts District to create a path of art and light between the businesses and the canal. All of the installations, which were created by local artists, will remain on display through Dec. 31. The initiative is designed to support businesses in Old Town Scottsdale. Some of the installations will be placed outside the businesses while others will be inside.

For its inaugural year in 2018, Scottsdale Public Art commissioned local artists to enhance eight different sites in downtown Scottsdale with light-based art installations. Those locations included LDV Winery, On The Edge Gallery, Vintage by Misty, the balcony above Earth and Images, The Herb Box, Sugar and ‘Spro, the intersection of Marshall Way and 3rd Avenue, and Carlson Creek Vineyard Wine Tasting Room, in addition to Scottsdale Public Art’s storefront space on 5th Avenue.

Artists who participating in the 2018 Local Light included Mike Butzine, Casey Farina, Lynn Gustafson, Lisa Hoffner, Michelle Meyer, Mike Miller, Craig Randich, Lily Reeves, Jenny Willigrod, Danielle Wood, and Eli Richard, whose Sun Lanterns were reinstalled in Old Town following their removal from the inactive fountains at Scottsdale Civic Center Mall.

Information about the 2019 Local Light initiative is coming soon.

The Local Light initiative will also play a role in Scottsdale Contemporary Month from October 26 – November 25 and Scottsdazzle. Check ScottsdalePublicArt.org up to and throughout the initiative for updates on Local Light-related events and for information about the artists and artwork.
