Workshops and Art Experiences
All of the events listed below are from the November 2018 event. Information is coming soon for the 2019 event!
Canal Convergence features a wealth of workshops and other artistic experiences spread across the 10 days.
Butterfly Automata with Skunk Control
In this hands-on workshop, participants will be able to construct a butterfly that flutters its wings when the hand crank is turned. The wings create colorful shadows from multi-colored films inside the wings. All participants can take home the butterflies they build. Space is limited; RSVP required.

Collage with Cut + Paste PHX
Local artist group Cut + Paste PHX will host two workshops on the canal where participants use recycled materials from old books and magazines to create their own take-home artistic collage.

Community Art with Scottsdale Artists’ School
Join Scottsdale Artists’ School for one of these community art projects. On Sunday, Nov. 11, from 2–8 p.m., Grow with artist Holly Lynn Schineller as participants help cultivate a field of large-scale flowers using circular, art-worthy recyclables in concentric patterns. Create with the artist or just watch as the art grows throughout the evening. On Thursday, Nov. 15 from 5–8 p.m., Recycle with artist Holly Lynn Schineller as participants upcycle colorful cardstock into beautiful, radiating and repeating patterns. Participant creations can be added to the collective installation or taken home. On Sunday, Nov. 18 from 2–8 p.m., Glow with artist Darlene Curtis as participants learn about the shapes of constellations or create their own pattern in glowing colors.

Floatus Workshop with The Walter Hive
Join creators from The Walter Hive, in affiliation with the artists behind Walter Productions’ Floatus, to make your own miniature, take-home Floatus.
West Canal, Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018, 6–7 p.m.
Floret: Playing with Air with Koros Design
In this workshop, participants will build their own flying toy. Choose from three different toys—paper boomerang, wind spinner, or parachute—or make all three. Space is limited; RSVP required.

Glow Tunnel Art with Scottsdale Artists’ School
Visitors to the canal are invited to contribute to a large-scale chalk mural in the tunnel under the Marshall Way Bridge. Led by Scottsdale Artists’ School, participants will use glow-in-the-dark chalk to fill in an image.

Live Mural Painting with Kyllan Maney
Artist Kyllan Maney will work with Scottsdale Solid Waste on a community art project throughout Canal Convergence. She will create three interactive murals on large Dumpsters representing three elements of the event: light, water and sustainability. Maney will paint a small mural on the side of each Dumpster while members of the community join in to create art on the remaining sides of each of the three Dumpsters. During the Stencil Workshop, participants can choose a stencil to add to the Sustainability concept mural. For the Fill-in-the-Blank Painting Workshop, participants can paint inside pre-designed shapes on the Water concept mural. And during the Sticker Workshop, participants will add stickers to the Light concept mural. Additionally, on the final day of Canal Convergence, Maney will lead participants in a ground stencil workshop.

Natural Dyes with Erika Lynne Hanson
Fiber artist Erika Lynne Hanson will offer a natural dye workshop where participants can learn to dye their own fabrics using natural materials. Bring your own small fabric to dye or use what we provide.

Plein Air Club: Scottsdale Chapter with Erika Lynne Hanson
Local artist Erika Lynne Hanson will lead multiple plein air drawing workshops, taking participants on a walkabout around the Arizona Canal to find inspiration. Equipped with drawing tools and a camping chair, participants will choose a location and Hanson will guide them in creating a unique drawing. Space is limited. All supplies included. Wear comfortable walking shoes.

Repurposed, LED-Illuminated Holiday Garlands with Ann Morton
Reuse, recycle and redecorate with local artist Ann Morton. She will instruct guests on how to cut creative shapes out of recycled plastic bottles, aluminum cans, beads and other recycled materials, and thread them onto a rope of battery-powered LED lights to illuminate their take-home holiday garland.

Re-Wilding Waste with Martin Taylor
Artist Martin Taylor (Re-Cyclone) will host a workshop where participants contribute to a large communal mosaic made entirely out of recycled bottle caps.
West Canal, Sundays, Nov. 11 and 18, 2018, 2–6 p.m.
Screen Printing with Eli Richard
Local artist Eli Richard will be out on the canal ready to help you screen print your own T-shirt or bag. Just bring along a plain, light-colored T-shirt or canvas bag and then pick out your design.

Vermicompost 101 with Michael Jennings
Michael Jennings will lead groups in a short discussion on the ins and outs of composting using worms. Participants will create their own composting buckets using worms, dirt, and other materials. Then participants can decorate their buckets using paint and other recycled supplies.
