Something in the Canal

What lies beneath the surface of the Arizona Canal? Many animals call the canal home—many we never see. This five-stop augmented reality experience, via the CanalConvergence channel on the Hoverlay app, allows you to “capture” fish in a virtual aquarium and look closely at the aquatic life that play an important part in the Arizona Canal’s ecosystem. This experience is designed by animation professors and students from Phoenix College’s digital arts department: Erik Erspamer, Jeff Everhart, and Ruben Gonzales.

Please be aware of your surroundings while using the app.

Location: Along the western section of the Arizona Canal at the Scottsdale Waterfront. Begin the tour southwest of the Marshall Way Bridge.

How to Access AR at Canal Convergence

Before visiting the event, access your mobile device’s app store, download the Hoverlay app, and follow instructions to install the Hoverlay camera browser app on your mobile device. Search for the CanalConvergence channel to unlock these experiences at home, or look for QR codes on signs or ground stickers at the Scottsdale Waterfront and around Old Town Scottsdale. Please note: the app requires an augmented reality-capable device running iOS 13 or later or Android 7.0 or later.
